Local Unit & Position Description

Marine Operations and Dynamic Positioning Services is a team within our Noble Denton marine services business unit which perform a wide number of different marine advisory and consultancy services including, but not limited to:

  • Dynamic Positioning Services
  • Dive Systems
  • Vessel assurance and marine surveys (CMID, OVID, on/off-hire, condition, suitability)
  • Towing Vessel Approval Scheme (TVAS)
  • Rig Moves
  • Advisory services for rig moves, float-over operations, FPSO relocations, mooring operations, offshore heavy lifts, subsea power cable installations and all operations related to offshore wind farms
  • General marine consultancy
  • Marine casualty investigation
  • Development and assurance of procedures
  • Provision of marine key personnel, e.g. tow masters, mooring masters, pilots, salvage masters.


The team employs a wide variety of personnel including master mariners, electrical engineers, marine systems engineers and control system engineers who work individually or collectively on a wide variety of multi-disciplinary projects. Projects personnel are involved on can range from anything from single day surveys to part of a team developing the FMEA on a newbuild vessel over multiple years on a wide range of different types of dynamically positioned vessels including some of the modern, most complex designs such as heavy lift, drill ships, semi-submersibles, dive support, pipe-lay, cable-lay and subsea construction vessels.


We are looking to expand our team specifically with respect to our dynamic positioning services line covering the following typical activities although the nature of the work can involve various different and adhoc activities related to our maritime clients:

  • Failure Mode and Effect Analysis of Dynamic Positioning (DP) Systems
  • Failure Mode and Effect Analysis of Mission Critical Systems (for example cranes, ballast & bilge, pipelay, cablelay)
  • Creation of Proving and Annual DP Trials Programmes
  • Attendance at Proving and Annual DP Trials
  • DP Assurance Audits
  • DP Incident Investigation


We are looking for a control systems engineer to join our team to work on projects associated with the above activities to develop as part of our team and build their knowledge and experience of control systems to become an invaluable member of the team and to develop to work on some of our more complex and challenging long term projects.


The role is office based but with regular trips onboard ships and other floating installations within the UK/Northern Europe and potentially in any worldwide location.


This opportunity is open to anyone from a control systems background but is aimed predominantly at engineer/senior engineer level personnel with 3 to 10 years of relevant experience.

Position Qualifications

We would expect all applicants to have the following:

  • Degree qualified in control systems engineering (or similar) with a minimum 2.1 BEng qualification
  • Experience performing analysis of control systems
  • Experience within the maritime industry ideally with including experience with dynamic positioning / power management systems
  • Knowledge of IMCA and MTS Guidelines
  • Knowledge and understanding of control systems networks including failure modes and weaknesses (ethernet, profibus, modbus etc.)
  • Experience of independent site work and communicating/reporting to all levels of personnel both internally and within client organisations
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel predominantly)
  • Desire to travel for limited periods for worldwide work both onshore and offshore on vessels and floating installations
  • Numerate, articulate and comfortable with working with large text graphic documents
  • Enjoy working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 40% of the time


In addition, the following attributes would be welcome although not essential:

  • Knowledge of and familiarity with using one or all of Python programming, MATLAB, CAD or Visio
  • Member of an appropriate engineering institute (IET, IMarest) and looking to develop their career towards Chartered status if not already Chartered
  • Knowledge of and experience with IOGP PLC audits to support our dive service line 
  • Accredited with the IMCA DP Practitioner scheme
